    Elementary Overview

     

    At SMIC, students enrolled in our Elementary Program enjoy a well-rounded education with a structured daily schedule. Here’s what a typical day looks like:

     

    Seven Class Periods: Each lasting 45 minutes.

     

    Core Subjects:

     

    English Language Arts: 2 periods daily

    Math: 1 period daily

    Science: 1 period daily

    Chinese: 8 periods weekly

     

    Specials:

     

    IT, Art, SEL, and Music: 1 period each, once a week

    Physical Education: 3 periods each week

    Elementary Curriculum

     

    ELA

     

    Our ELA Common Core curriculum uses a balanced literacy approach with diverse fiction and nonfiction texts, emphasizing comprehension strategies, vocabulary, and critical thinking. It guides students through the writing process, promotes effective communication through discussions and presentations, and emphasizes language conventions, grammar, and vocabulary. It offers differentiated instruction, and assessments for progress monitoring, and integrates technology with digital resources and tools to enhance learning.

     

    In our elementary ELA program, students will develop these skills:

     

    Better Use of Academic Language: Students will learn to use academic language more effectively, helping them discuss and understand complex ideas.

    Improved Critical Thinking: By answering questions based on texts and closely reading, students will learn to think critically and understand what they read.

    Stronger Writing Skills: With different writing activities, students will get better at writing clearly and adapting their style for different purposes.

Language Arts and Language Learning


High School Curriculum: World Languages

Chinese Language & Culture (Grade 9-12)

Develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the study of diverse genres. Students will express active reading strategies to analyze how authors use literary, structure and language in their writing. Students will also practice writings with sincere feelings by using a variety of expression methods and choosing appropriate literary style which also emphasizing culture awareness and logical thinking. 

Chinese Literature (Grade 11-12)

Engage students in a discussion concerning the ideas expressed in Chinese literary texts. Emphasis is on applying critical thinking, logical reasoning, and analysis, to all subject matter. Students read and analyze selected literary texts, both contemporary and classic, from cross-cultural perspective and are trained to express their ideas about the world in an academic setting, using a more complex set of structures and a more advanced range of vocabulary. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of literary terms, themes, strategies, and issues relevant to Chinese literature. 

Chinese Language Learning 1 (HSK 2 and 3) (Grade 9-12)

This course enhances students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Chinese at the HSK 2 level. Students learn approximately 300 new words and use basic sentence structures to communicate on everyday topics. Through conversations, role-plays, and reading short texts, they practice real-life communication. Writing focuses on constructing simple sentences and short paragraphs. The course also covers cultural topics such as daily routines, festivals, and customs to improve both language skills and cultural understanding. 

Chinese Language Learning 2 (HSK 4) (Grade 9-12)

This course builds on HSK 3 and develops students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the HSK 4 level, covering topics like job hunting, relationships, health, shopping, and traditional Chinese culture. Students engage in close reading, writing, and grammar exercises to expand their vocabulary and master complex structures. Through role-plays, discussions, and presentations, they improve fluency and develop critical thinking and cross-cultural communication skills.

Chinese Language Learning 3 (HSK 5) (Grade 9-12)

This course follows the HSK 5 standard and focuses on improving students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. HSK 5 serves as the primary textbook, supplemented with authentic materials such as newspapers, drama dialogues, and short videos. Topics include contemporary Chinese society, traditional culture, history, geography, and modern literature. Students engage in intensive reading, text analysis, and writing practice to understand complex texts, refine their expression, and improve fluency. The course builds a strong foundation for students to use advanced Chinese confidently in various settings and deepens their understanding of Chinese society and culture.

Introduction to Korean (Grade 10-12)

Introduction to French (Grade 10-12)
